What is Golf?

Golf is a game where a person hits a little ball laying on
the ground with a stick called a golf club into a small
hole, also in the ground. This type of ball game does not
have a specific area of play but the game is played on an
area of land that has been mapped out for this specific
game. This area of land is called a golf course.
Holes are of course in the ground but in golf it is also
the distance from the tee to where the ball is hit. The
Green is an island of grass around the hole and this is
where all players want to be.
The grass on the area immediately surrounding the hole,
commonly referred to as the putting green, is cut extremely
short so the ball can roll easily. When a player hits the
ball into the cup, he has completed play on that hole. The
object of the game is to hit the ball into the cup in fewer
strokes than an opponent. Skilled players require fewer
strokes to hit the ball into the hole.
There are many dangers along the fairways of a
golf course like lakes, sand traps, trees, rocks, rivers
and streams. There are rules that go with the hazards such
as a player is not allowed to touch the ground with the
club before hitting the ball, not even for a practice
swing. If a player hits the ball into a hazard, he or she
can play it where it lays. If the ball can't be hit then
the player may remove it to the outside of the hazard but
will suffer a one stroke penalty. If the ball sinks to the
bottom of a lake then the ball can be replaced but it still
costs a penalty.
Every hole is classified by its par, usually determined by
the distance from the tee to the green. Par is the number
of strokes an expert golfer should take in hitting the ball
into the hole. Par three holes typically range in distance
from 100 to 224 meters while par four holes from 225 to 434
meters. Par five holes usually contain a distance of 435
meters or greater.
